Summer Macroinvertebrate Count Shows Creek in Poor Health

Our summer macroinvertebrate survey of the Little Falls Creek discovered only 8 species which gives the creek a poor rating for its biological health. The Summer macroinvertebrate count is part of our water quality monitoring program. We survey the creek 4 times a year to learn about its biological health. Learn more about our stream program and past survey results HERE. See below for list of macroinvertebrates found on Sunday. The organisms we find are generally the larva form of flies and other insects. Thank you to our crew and to Frank Sanford who leads the effort every season.

Letter from the Field:

Cylindrical Leech. Photo by Frank Sanford

Thanks to my efficient and knowledgeable crew who survived the heat and low water!   I actually think the lack of rain might have helped our numbers (less pollution washing in)  I know Sarah M is sorry she wasn't there to see our leech collection.  A special thanks to Linnea Darius - a first time monitor but with good macro background.  Sadly she won't be here in the Fall, but hopefully winter.

Macros list

Cylindrical leeches - 5

Aquatic worms - 1

Planarians - 30

Aquatic sowbugs - 15

Black flies - 4

Common netspinners cadisflies- 45

Fingernet cadisflies - 2

Small minow mayflies - Baetus - 9

Did see numerous common water striders and many adult damselflies, but no larvae.

Forgot to mention in "official report," found the largest snake shed I have every seen - in stream.  Assume it was from common water snake and would say it measured 2- 2.5 inches across.
