Hidden Gems
Take the Earth Day Challenge
The Little Falls watershed is full of special places - ponds, waterfalls, creeks and little groves. While many people enjoy a walk along the Capital Crescent or the Little Falls Hiker/Biker trail, we challenge you to find a hidden gem, a special place off the beaten track. To whet your interest, our board members have been sending pictures of their favorite spots.

“This area of the upper Willett Branch is my hidden gem. This area is on the Little Falls Trail, south of Norwood Park and just above where the concrete lining starts. This spot gives me hope and inspiration for the planned Willett Greenway Park in Westbard. It shows how robust the creek is without the concrete and how lovely the future park can be!” - Mikel

The area at the mouth of the Little Falls is so different from the rest of the Stream Valley Park, large open floodplain area with many channels flowing into the rapidly moving Potomac, an eye opener and so exciting to experience this in our watershed

I fell in love with the Little Falls Branch while walking my dog through the woods in the Town of Somerset. The trail runs along the creek across stepping stones and through a beautiful beech grove. My kids spent hours playing here every summer.

Did you know there is a pond on the Little Falls? OK, it’s not a huge pool, but it is the largest on the Little Falls, its widest section, and among its deepest. Since 2015, I have been committed to exploring every stretch of the stream. I found the pond where the creek emerges below MacArthur Blvd in the Brookmont neighborhood. I selected it as my hidden gem because the pond and the section of creek immediately below it is surrounded by steep relief, a bit difficult to get down to, and rarely visited. Yet it is one of most scenic stretches of the entire watershed.
