CANCELED: Walk the Willett Branch

IMG_4208.jpg

Meet at the Westwood Center II parking lot
5110 Ridgefield Road, Bethesda

CANCELLED due to pandemic

Did you know there is a creek in the Westbard Sector? The Willett Branch runs through the sector in a concrete ditch with walls covered in graffiti, the banks littered with tires, appliances and other trash. It’s truly an eyesore. But it isn’t going to stay that way! The new development calls for a new Willett Branch stream valley park and the plan is to restore the creek to a natural state.

Our creek tour will include visiting the cemetery area by Westwood Tower Apartments and the former River Road Community sites.

The tour will start at the intersection of River and Ridgefield and end on Little Falls Parkway where the creek joins the Little Falls Branch. The walk is a half-mile walk downstream on the pavement with an optional return up the creek. (The creek is concrete lined and very shallow - 2 or 3 inches max.) Wear boots that can get wet and bring a flashlight if you are interested in returning along this path. There is a steep slope to enter and exit the creek.

If you have never been in this area, I promise you're in for a surprise! Bring your kids and your dogs. It's a fun tour. The total round trip is less than a mile.
